This project is presently being implemented in Sierra Leone with more countries to follow soon.
The RemitPlus™ project has the following key components:
Options & Linkages: The pilot project (in Sierra Leone) seeks to optimise the impact of remittances by improving options for money transfers and linking remittances to other financial and business development services.
Rural Branches & MFIs: An electronic money transfer service will be set up, tested and installed in targeted rural and urban branches of FinanceSalone (the largest Micro Finance Institution in Sierra Leone).
Senders in the Diaspora: Remittance senders will be given financial literacy training about how to improve the management of their personal finances and about financial services and investment opportunities in their country of origin.
Receivers in Africa: Remittance recipients will be given financial literacy training, business support and investment advice, to help them start and develop small businesses.
Lessons & Replication: The project will be monitored, reviewed and evaluated. Findings, lessons and observations will be disseminated amongst a wide range of stakeholders (by June 2011), so that improved versions of the RemitPlus™ scheme can be replicated in different African and developing countries.

Through the above activities, RemitPlus™ seeks to achieve the goal of ‘improving livelihoods in Africa by using remittances and migrant capital to promote rural and enterprise development through improvements in the performance of new and existing businesses’.
